Lois thinks she is a good person. What about yourself…are you a good person?

I was born in the early 60’s and growing up I watched cartoons like Fat Albert, The Road Runner and Bugs Bunny.

Into my teens I would watch Archie Bunker, The Jeffersons & Good Times (DynoMite!). So please excuse me if I am not up on today’s adult cartoon series like South Park or Family Guy. Yet in the Family guy clip you just watched did you catch the exchange between Lois and the Officer? “ I am a good person Joe” Lois says. Officer Joe responds, “Sometimes good people do bad things Lois”.

Well the truth is that NOBODY is good! You see the term ‘good’ is an adjective with a definition of morally excellent, virtuous, righteous, pious. In Mark 10 Jesus had an encounter with a rich man. This rich man saw Jesus from afar and ran up to Him and knelt down. “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus replied, “Why do you call Me good? There is none good but God alone.” Jesus declared that no human being is good.

Well you might be good in your eyes when comparing yourself against a friend or foe but compared against Jesus you are not a morally excellent, virtuous, righteous, pious person. And why is that…because you have broken the Law of God. That action has the biblical terminology of sin or sinning. Every person who has ever been born or will be born before the Second Advent of Jesus Christ is a sinner. No person has ever been born a sinner but has become one by breaking one of the Ten Commandments. Let me explain…

On the day that you became a sinner in the eyes of God you exchanged your innocence for an indictment. That day may be one that you remember very well. Internally you were confronted with a choice and you made the wrong one. You see your moral reasoning (conscience) collided with your mental reasoning (mind) and at that moment you sinned. What age did this happen to me? The day you reached the age of accountability (Isa 7) is only known by God. What did I do to become a sinner? Only God can tell you for sure yet maybe you do remember the moment. Did you tell a lie (breaking the 9th commandment), steal something (breaking the 8th commandment) or maybe you screamed at your parents or called them a dirty name (breaking the 5th commandment). Does that jog your memory? Since that moment you have lived your life a sinner under the blue skies crediting sins to your account. That account will come due the day you die because the wages of your sins is death (Rom 6).

Once you understand you have sinned against God then a judgment must take place. In the same kind of way when you break a traffic law. You go to the courthouse and stand before the Judge. You plead innocent or guilty. The Judge reviews the case file holding all the evidence against you. He determines you broke the law and you must pay. In a human courtroom most likely it is monetary damages you pay. Yet in the heavenly courtroom your sin debt must be paid with your life. For the wages of sin is death. An unrepentant person is destined to die in their sins eternally lost. If that is you then your destination at the second death would be the Lake of Fire (Rev 20) with the devil and his angels. But have you heard what God did so you won’t have to pay for your own sin debt?

He sent Jesus into the world to die on a cross. That death accomplished much but with respect to humanity, the penalty for sin was paid by Jesus. God reconciled the world to Himself through the blood of Jesus thus opening a spiritual doorway regenerating your spirit. This restored your relationship you had with God before you became a sinner at the age of accountability…..So here is how your sin debt can be paid..you must acknowledge you have sinned against God and repent. Acknowledging you are a sinner is agreeing with God that you have committed the crimes. Repenting means you will now stop doing those crimes and commit to doing right. Your desire to run after wickedness will now be replaced with a desire to run after righteousness.  I would ask you to think about what I have shared because your eternal destiny is at stake. I would ask you to listen to the Holy Spirit’s promptings in your heart at this very moment. Obey them or else…He leaves the choice up to you
