“The more I look at the universe, the less convinced I am”
Neil deGrasse Tyson has to be one of the foremost astrophysicist of our time. He is often seen on countless programming venues such as CBS, PBS as well as several Joe Rogan podcasts. In this brief clip he doubts the existence of God based upon his concept of “universal good.”
I will admit many who hold a similar worldview comes to the same conclusions/quandary. If God is real, and He is good, then why is there so much “bad” in the world. Yet I am curious why deGrasse has this simple yet profound oversight. Newton’s Second Law of Motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. His hypothesis that the amount of existing bad eliminates the correlation of an equal and opposite amount of good. He does not see it and here is why.
All the bad in the world that he describes is very real and true. All we have to do is look around and see the inhumanity perpetrated upon humanity by humanity. The fact is that all the bad happening in the world is caused by the “god of this age.” This god has a name which is Satan. He is also known as the Devil. He is real and the Bible tells us all that we need to know about him.
This is the other side of the fact that nobody factors in when articulating the same paradigm as deGrasse. God is good, VERY GOOD, yet those who are perishing don’t see it. This is because Satan has blinded their (and your) eyes in order to keep you under his domain of darkness. Satan is the god you are currently serving whether you believe it or not. You are serving him by default because you have become a sinner in the eyes of God. You have broken His Laws and you are storing up wrath for yourself unless you repent. Let me explain…
On the day that you became a sinner in the eyes of God you exchanged your innocence for an indictment. That day may be one that you remember very well. Internally you were confronted with a choice and you made the wrong one. You see your moral reasoning (conscience) collided with your mental reasoning (mind) and at that moment you sinned. What age did this happen to me? The day you reached the age of accountability (Isa 7) is only known by God. What did I do to become a sinner? Only God can tell you for sure yet maybe you do remember the moment. Did you tell a lie (breaking the 9th commandment), steal something (breaking the 8th commandment) or maybe you screamed at your parents or called them a dirty name (breaking the 5th commandment). Does that jog your memory? Since that moment you have lived your life a sinner under the blue skies crediting sins to your account. That account will come due the day you die because the wages of your sins is death (Rom 6).
While you have been living life under the blue skies of this wonderful creation God has been reaching out to you. Jesus said in John 12, He would draw ALL men (people ) to Himself if He was lifted up. He was crucified on a cross and was resurrected 3 days later. That cross was a partial fulfillment of His words. Since then He has been reaching out to every human being (and yes you) in order that they might be saved from the wrath to come. Here is how He has been reaching out to you.
The 3 Ways God reaches out to all mankind is through Creation, Conscience & Christ. In the Creation I want you to reflect on the beauty of the plants, the stars, the air you breath, how your body heals itself when you have a cut. The list goes on and this is the first step on the staircase to faith in God. You must concede that if there is a creation there has to be a Creator. Next, think about your conscience. I point back to the previous thought of your breaking the Ten Commandments. The conviction you felt was the Holy Spirit reaching out to you one more time to contemplate your sinful state and eternal destiny. That was the second step upward on the heavenly staircase. The third and final step is Christ Himself. He is the reason for the seasons of Christmas & Easter. Unlike the god (Satan) you celebrate at the season of Halloween. You have heard the name Jesus but do you know what His mission was…keep reading.
Jesus was sent into the world to die on a cross. That death accomplished much but with respect to humanity, the penalty for sin was paid by Jesus. God reconciled the world to Himself through the blood of Jesus thus opening a spiritual doorway regenerating your spirit. This restored your relationship you had with God before you became a sinner at the age of accountability. You will never experience this free gift from God unless you acknowledge you have sinned against God and repent. Acknowledging you are a sinner is agreeing with God that you have committed the crimes. Repenting means you will now stop doing those crimes and commit to doing right. Your desire to run after wickedness will now be replaced with a desire to run after righteousness.
Once you understand you have sinned against God then a judgment must take place. In the same kind of way when you break a traffic law. You go to the courthouse and stand before the Judge. You plead innocent or guilty. The Judge reviews the case file holding all the evidence against you. He determines you broke the law and you must pay. In a human courtroom most likely it is monetary damages you pay. Yet in the heavenly courtroom your sin debt must be paid with your life. For the wages of sin is death. An unrepentant person is destined to die in their sins eternally lost. If that is you then your destination at the second death would be the Lake of Fire (Rev 20) with the devil and his angels.
I would ask you to think about what I have shared because your eternal destiny is at stake. I would ask you to listen to the Holy Spirit’s promptings in your heart at this very moment. Obey them or else…He leaves the choice up to you.
